Last night we held yet another Utah blogger dinner in Draper, Utah. There were 12 in attendance and a few others who couldn’t make it at the last minute. You know who you are.
We completed geeked it when Phil pulled out his extension cord and surge protector and ran it down the middle of the table because he had been on the road all day.
We talked about so many things from business and politics to raising children and education to business and personal goals to business practices and seo. It was so interesting that many of us were there until 10:30 pm. Of course, the others would have stayed if they could have, right?
For anyone reading this, please join us next time.
Here’s the details:
WHO: Everyone is invited
WHAT: Bring any discussion on your mind
WHEN: The 4th Thursday of each month
WHERE: Applebees in Draper, Utah (on 123th just off I-15)
So I forgot to post the Seth Godin badge to my website a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been working with several Utah bloggers to raise the money necessary to attract Seth Godin to speak to Utah bloggers and business-people.
I even offered to have Seth shave my head and then Phil Burns agreed to as well. He also came up with the idea of sponsors for our heads upon shaving them. Then Thom Allen stepped up (he’s already bald) to join the team in finding sponsors to help us raise the money more quickly.
Besides my son is very excited about having my head shaved.
Although much has been done in the way of pledges we’re still short by a few hundred. However, we’ve surpassed Phoenix (which has over twice the number of residents) and we’ve been able to get 3 corporate sponsors so far. Hundreds of blogs have been written (excellent) about Seth’s new book and Utah bloggers are working on media coverage for the event.
If Seth decides to come to Utah it will likely get nationwide coverage on the nightly news because of our head-shaving. In my day job, we’ve done these kinds of promotions before and received nationwide news coverage for less. This is nothing compared to the YouTube and blog coverage for all involved.
I’ve been moblogging for a few weeks now but I’ve been online for years and developed hundreds of websites without a care (or the knowledge) of how to make a better mobile website.
It’s interesting because if more geeks and developers were mobile than mobile websites would get better instantly. We can’t stand it when something we create doesn’t work as intended and when it comes to mobile it rarely does.
If e-commerce companies would buy their dev team mobile phones with full Internet access their ROI would be sharp. For example: I tried to book a Las Vegas hotel room from my phone last week and had to connect to my laptop instead. Not everyone has a laptop and those that do don’t always have it with them, thus the reason we have phones with Internet access - it’s more convenient.
If I could’ve booked my room from my phone, it would have saved 15 minutes and I’d be telling everyone which travel site was best for booking hotel rooms from your mobile.
Ultimately we have a better chance of creating mobile websites with CSS but we need to be aware and be willing to take the time to build a mobile interface. This is my greatest barrier - taking the time - but my audiences are rarely (less than 1 percent) mobile making the ROI very poor.
His books are so easy to read and understand and it’s obvious that he’s so far ahead of any marketplace I’ve been involved with that the information is still new 2-3 years from the time I read it. In other words, he’s bleeding edge.
NOTE: Interestingly, his blog is harder for me to follow because the quick bursts of information are often without context (just the way he intended, I’m sure) but more difficult than his books nonetheless.
Back to the reason for this post… 13 Reasons Seth Godin Should Come to Utah to promote his new book The Dip:
Utah is full of passionate business-people who need to hear your message
Utah has beautiful weather
We have 36 people pledged so far in just 2 days and more coming every hour
Utah has beautiful people
I shaved my head when I was 15 years old just to see what it was like and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith rubbed my bald head after the concert. I’LL DO IT AGAIN IF YOU MAKE IT TO UTAH. Besides we want to rub your bald head for good luck.
Utah geeks love you!
DigitalThom says Seth always asks “Why do things the same way?” Seth have you ever been to Utah? Well, even if you have, it’s been a while and you need to visit us again.
We have a great ATV, hiking, biking, and camping community where you can get in touch with nature.
libel_vox says that Seth is very smart to have his fans help promote his new book and book tour. Seth, we’re working very hard to make it happen.
Seth, we’ve all blogged about you this week, along with hundreds/thousands of others around the country. However, Utah is unique because we have so many young entrepreneurs who are going to be running the nation’s companies in the decades to come.
Utah bloggers pass this message. Get everyone you know to pledge today so we can get Seth to Utah.
So it’s been a few weeks since my first twitter review and it’s gotten some pretty good traffic since I’m ranked at 2 or 4 (for: twitter review) depending on which Google server you see.
I’m completely on board with twitter now. My wife hates twitter.
A new phone that can handle 5,000 texts a month and unlimited Internet connection so I can blog from the phone or connect it to my laptop for improved typing performance gives me full access to my network whether I’m working, traveling, out to lunch ;-), or waiting in line for just about anything… the store, doctor, tanning (which was done directly from my new phone), etc.
I love twitter. But keep in mind that until March 22, 2007 I had never even sent a single text message. I had no need until then. Now I’m nearing the 300 mark for outgoing texts and roughly 1800 inbound texts.
I’ve strengthened several friendships over twitter because you get to know people by what they write. And, I’ve got some great twitter friends even if we disagree about things sometimes. Not really it’s more like friendly jesting.
I highly recommend twitter to anyone who wants to keep in touch because it’s the opposite of a time-waster, as many think. Try it and you’ll see why so many people call themselves twits.
Tanning seems so silly to me but getting a sunburn on vacation sucks so my wife and I decided to get a little tanning done before our trip south.
My wife tans easily and it takes a lot for her to burn. I, on the other hand, burn easily and need to ease into it slowly with lots of lotion.
So we showed up tonight to get a few minutes of tanning in and there was a line coming out the door. Ridiculous. How many people do you know that have too much tan? I think hey were all here tonight.
Hopefully this will be enough to ward of the sunburn gods so I can enjoy my vacation sunburn-free.
Last night I had my new Motorola Q scratch-proofed because once the screen on a PDA is scratched it becomes useless to me. But you can also protect your iPod, Laptop, digital camera, PSP, DS, etc.
I got it through Berto at University Mall in Orem, Utah. He’s in a kiosk outside the Verizon store on the East side of the mall just south of the kid’s tree playhouse.
This video isn’t great (too long) but it shows how the protective screen works against scratches.
I’m surprised that Laura hasn’t talked about this on her gadget blog.
Every year around this time I’m usually preparing for my first full week of vacation for the year. I’ve usually had a few weekends and maybe a day or two to relax but 2007 has been very stressful and trying.
I haven’t even had a full day off since January 1 so I’m extremely exhausted and ready for some good R&R. The pool, golf, shopping for new summer clothes with the kids, maybe a true Vegas show (besides all the free stuff to do there), and some time to reflect on life.
We’ll stop in Las Vegas on the way there and back and maybe stay in St. George too if we have time. There are so many things to do in the desert this time of year because it’s not too hot yet so it’s like an early summer.
I’m looking into the roller coaster at the Sahara or the Tiger and Dolphin show at the Mirage. The Elvis museum is closed until 2010.
In California we’re going to swim, golf, hang out with grandma and grandpa, try to meet up with our friends in San Diego and Los Angeles. No Disneyland this time, but maybe Knott’s Berry Farm or California Adventure Park.
