It’s been a couple weeks since I posted Ash the Keyword: An SEO Challenge and if you’ve been following my results in Google you noticed that my ranking for Ash slipped from #126, where I started on August 1, to #138 within a week. This was fully expected along with this morning’s results of showing up at #108. So within two weeks of making a few minor adjustments (less than 2 hours work) I’ve been able to increase my ranking from #126 to #108 on a keyword with 126 million competing pages and this will continue as I invest a tiny amount of time and consistently focus on the keyword Ash.

Why did my listing slip before getting better? Because I’ve been working on making the necessary changes to boost my listing up for my main keyword Ash. Anytime you take a stale blog (I just started writing again after 6-8 months) and start making SEO changes to it, you’re going to see all kinds of ups and downs as Google and the other search engines try to determine where to place you.

There’s also the factor of links coming to my blog from other sites that need to be indexed and each of their schedules are timed differently from mine. SEO is a process that must be approached with care and patience and as long as you follow the rules you will succeed. I’ll continue to update you on the progress of my quest to rank in the top 10 of Google for my name, Ash, with roughly 126 million competing pages.

BTW: I’ll be speaking at WordCamp Utah next month if you’d like additional tips in person.
